Book 2 from JD Franx's epic new saga!
Few people survive the suffering that Kael Symes has experienced. Hot steel, demonic magic, and the loss of those he loves.

After escaping the horrors of Arkum Zul, Kael and his companions survive a terror-filled night on the ocean only to find themselves shipwrecked and stranded in the Wildlands. With forest tribals on the warpath and old enemies roaming the forest, Kael struggles to come to terms with what he is slowly becoming—a killer. A DeathWizard.

In the fight against the evil that threatens to consume him, Kael learns that the Dwarven Mountains far to the north may hide an ancient monolith that holds the answer to the corruption that flows in his veins.

But trekking across Talohna is a dangerous prospect. It is a world that holds its secrets close. The cost of uncovering them may very well be his soul and quite possibly his life.

I would love to give this book five stars, but honestly, it had me so frustrated throughout most of it that I can't. I had to put it down a few times because I was yelling at the characters to open their da** eyes and see what was actually going on around them.

First... way, way too many POV throughout the book. Stick to the main characters please. We don't need a POV from every random character in the book. I understand that the characters stories all intertwined somehow, but it just made me frustrated and wondering, "Who is this? Why do we need a chapter from their POV?" There was A LOT going on, and it was sometimes hard to follow everything.

Second... why bring Kael, Max, and Ember so close together so often for them to just miss each other every time? Lies and near misses made me so frustrated. Max, Ember, and Yrlissa should have gone off on their own to find Kael and left everyone else behind.

Third... Kyah was way too good to be true. I suspected her of ulterior motives from the beginning of the book... and I wasn't wrong. Why did everyone believe her lies and not call her on it when conflicting stories came about? Ugh!

And that ending... I... I can't even express how frustrated and upset I am. There must be some way back for that character... cause without them the story is kind of a flop.

Overall, the story was written well, if confusingly. The author always writes a good story to follow along with.

I'm awaiting the next book, hoping the author redeems himself for this book.

Blood of the Lost The Darkness Within Trilogy Book 2 eBook JD Franx Reviews

Lots of twists & turns, fighting, magic, demons. I can't remember if the torture was in this book or the first one, but though graphic, impressive with the goodness of people still (trying not to give spoiler). I gave this one a 4 bc one must really pay attention to names/places & new story lines being added more than book 1. Thankfully has the search button of the book - then it wasn't too bad, but hardback would have been difficult for me. Also people somehow lost their common sense they had in book one?? I still am recommending for even with some flaws it was still a good book & I look forward to the 3rd book!!!! Hope it comes out soon!! ))
The series started off so well with a continually developing plot and relatively speaking few Povs to keep track of all while maintain a sense of suspense as every character is still technically speaking developing their power... then comes the sequel... first off with plot development... yes the backstory is developed as the cause of the chaos of the current timeline... but only in the last couple chapters... and yes kael gets some new weapons but that's basically where his character development ends until the last few chapters... otherwise it is mostly comprised of little short stories in which "The condemned hero of kael enters _____ and finds ____ and shall do ___ to fix it and garner the friendships of ____ and ____ and ___" with one exception in which it first goes as such until it is retold to his pursuers whom here it closer to "the peaceful people where minding there own business when they saw a travelling pair whom requested a place to rest which the peaceful people granted as they are so nice... and then when the peaceful ones when to pray the travelling pair when crazy and butchered them all... with only the one who told the story left to know what happened" and then some problems where found with the story making it clear to anyone including those whom heard the story that it is a constructed story to cast blame on the guiltless kael... also in the edition I read it appears as though it where barely or not eddited... From a wandering plot to the errors in which the date is mistyped "unless another archwizard of the name of Giddeon Zirkos' that was around in 2025 while the current one is around in 5025 having become a master wizard in the early 4900s and being only a few centuries old anyway... and an instance in which I have to wignore a random w... besides all the flaws the book could easily serve to move the plot from one great book to another... so long as the author brings back a certain charector... being entirely honest where the next book out at the time of writing this review is simply scan the first page of every chapter until I found that character pov again and at that point is start reading the book from the beginning... because I have no reason to care about any of the kingdoms and especially not the king... little reason to care for Giddeon, Dominique, the city, or the revealed specie... and only some interest in the remaining main charectors... also when there are as many pov shifts as there are in this book to this many different characters it can take a few pages to realize who your reading from let alone why you care... now to be fair it is nice to see an author employ a means of creating suspense other than just "is main character going to die" by making it a question of "is the main character going to become like a rabid dog?" because unless this author is like George r r Martin the main character is safe as is the case for most every book... and as such there is no suspense for their survivability as dues ex machina will save them... even from death...
I was lucky enough to read the first book then right away read the second. The main characters seem realistic in their antagonism of each other, which I found was a great way to push the plot along and promote the idea that you really don't know who is right and who is wrong in this world. -- though by the end it becomes painfully clear. It's not really a surprise, but it's satisfying as the characters true selves begin to be revealed by their actions.

The plot and the characters are dense and thick and I am in awe of the feat. The writing and grammar is smoother. How can it not be, this author really puts in his dues with this intricate story. In the first book his imagination wasn't quite that creative, but by this, the end of the second, his creativity has definitely caught up to give us a fresh new world. Awesome. Buy this.
Blood of the Lost is the second book in JD Franx's Darkness Within Saga and I am so in love with this series. A lot of independently published books do not have the kind of scope and scale that JD's books do. The world building in this series is absolutely incredible which is exactly how an epic fantasy series should be! There are too few books like this in the world!
Honestly, I want to give the book one star. It took frustrating to a new level. And not one I enjoyed. Getting Kael and Ember close once or twice but not reuniting, ok. Doing it throughout the whole book was pure crap that drove me mad. And the ending was what the crap! I get it. You obviously have a direction the story is going but after this constant almost yet not quite together again stuff I'm just irritated. And there is so much crap not answered. I have too many questions. More than I want. I just feel defeated after this book.
